How to improve your credit score

Your credit score is one of the major things a lender considers before deciding if you are worthy for a loan.

Your credit score is based on personal and financial information that’s kept in your credit report. You can access your credit report for free from the many reporting agencies that operate in Australia.

Every time you apply for a loan the lender accesses your credit file and also marks your credit report with that enquiry. The enquiries drop off every 5 years, but all your loan applications can be seen on your report. Your report also includes data about your repayments, if they are late, credit limits on credit cards, directorships, defaults and much more.

Here are three ways to protect your credit report from diminishing and give yourself the best chance to get your loan approved

Only apply with one lender at a time

One of the biggest things that can diminish your credit report is to apply with different lenders at the same time, even if it’s for the same transaction. It’s best to decide on the lender you want to go with and only apply through them. Each lender will be suspicious of the outcome of the previous application and assume the previous lender didn’t find you worthy of a loan.

Pay your repayments on time

All loan repayments are recorded on your credit report. Any bank can now see if you have maintained your repayments on your existing or previous loans. This forms a big part of the credit assessment. Missed payments on an existing loan tell the new lender you cannot be trusted to make your repayments on time.

Pay your bills

The biggest defaults I see are due telephone bills not being paid. Many don’t pay their telephone bills on time for whatever reason (most common reason is when people move houses and don’t update their address with the service provider). This small bill you didn’t pay a few years back now shows up as a default on your credit file. This, again, shows the lender you cannot be trusted with making payments on time, or any payment at all.
